The group (US)² – Ultrasound and Signal brings together professors, researchers, students, interns, and collaborators to develop new ultrasound and acoustic technologies.Our projects cover medical ultrasound imaging, transducers, elastography, transcranial ultrasound, acoustic imaging, instrumentation, non-destructive testing, and signal processing. The team develops approaches that combine modeling, experimental design, micromanufacturing, electronics, GPU programming, and test-bench validation.

Direction

Nicolas QUAEGEBEUR, Ph.D., P.Eng., Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering. Nicolas leads research in ultrasound, signal processing, transducers, acoustics, vibrations, and non-destructive testing. His research focuses in particular on advanced ultrasound imaging, correlation-based reconstruction methods, non-conventional probe architectures, transcranial applications, and acoustic instrumentation. He also directs the Mechanical Engineering Instrumentation Platform at the Université de Sherbrooke (PIMUS) and contributes to the activities of CRASH-UdeS, the Quebec Bio-Imaging Network, and the Medical Imaging Axis of the CRCHUS.

Patrice MASSON, Ph.D., P.Eng., Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering. Patrice Masson contributes to the group’s activities through his expertise in acoustics, vibrations, instrumentation, ultrasound, non-destructive testing, and signal processing. He is involved in several projects related to transducers, medical and industrial ultrasound, transcranial applications, and the development of advanced experimental platforms.

Research professional

Maxime BILODEAU, Ph.D., Research Professional. Maxime Bilodeau is a central member of the team. His work focuses on correlation-based ultrasound imaging algorithms, medical imaging, ultrasound focusing, transducer prototyping, and the design of experimental setups. He supports students in the development of signal processing methods, integration on imaging platforms, programming, and experimental validation.Pierre

GRANDJEAN, Ph.D., Research Professional. Pierre Grandjean works on the development of acoustic cameras for the localization and characterization of environmental noise sources. His activities contribute to the development of objective measurement methods for industrial and environmental acoustics.

Graduate students

Nicolas SEVELLEC, Ph.D. Student. Nicolas works on the optimal localization of transducers for transcranial focused ultrasound applications. His project contributes to the development of portable ultrasound-guided diagnostic and therapeutic systems.

Loïc BOILEAU, Ph.D. Student. Loïc develops acoustic imaging methods using microphone arrays to estimate the acoustic power of environmental noise sources. His work combines instrumentation, signal processing, parallel computing, and validation in industrial environments.

Tamara KRPIC, Ph.D. Student. Tamara works on compressed acquisition and advanced ultrasound imaging. Her work focuses in particular on field-of-view extension, image homogenization, and reconstruction methods based on experimental databases.

Alexis CARRION, Ph.D. Student. Alexis develops non-conventional ultrasonic probe geometries for ultrasound imaging based on separate transmit and receive architectures. His work involves transducer array design, micromanufacturing, and 3D imaging.

Audrey GUY, M.Sc. Student. Audrey develops a methodology for identifying morphological and material properties in transcranial imaging. Her work contributes to the development of ultrasound technologies for applications related to ischemic stroke and sonothrombolysis.

Charles-Étienne TREMBLAY, Ph.D. Student. Charles-Étienne develops a direct intrinsic elastography method based on the deconvolution of ultrasonic radiofrequency signals. His work aims to estimate displacements and mechanical properties from raw ultrasound signals.
